Coffin Plate Death Records Online - B Surnames

Coffin plates are an overlooked free genealogical resource. They often contain the Birth Record and Death Record and can be used as a substitute for vital records. (Well technically they are not a substitute for vital records as the person giving the info might not have known for sure when the deceased was born or died. But it's a good place to start.)

In some rare cases the plates can contain even more information like place of birth or the occupation of the deceased. Unfortunately these valuable resources are scattered and there has not been a single repository for this valuable free genealogy resource until now. It is my intention to create a coffin plate database and a home for the unwanted plates themselves.

Here are the B SURNAMES I have online for Coffin Plates. I'll continue with the rest of my Coffin Plate Surnames over the next few days.

More Wicklow Ireland Data

I have added more to the Tenants renting land from Earl Fitzwilliam in County Wicklow Ireland in 1839. Anne Burgess has been transcribing the 1839 Fitzwilliam rentals records, and putting them into a spreadsheet for each townland, hoping in that way to construct a sort of census substatute for 1839 in southwest Wicklow. This is a great genealogy database.

The database now has the following Townlands.
Aghold Townland County Wicklow in 1839. A census substitute.
Ardoyne Townland County Wicklow in 1839. A census substitute.
Coolattin Townland County Wicklow in 1839. A census substitute.
Coolboy Townland County Wicklow in 1839. A census substitute.
Cronyhorn Townland County Wicklow in 1839. A census substitute.
Kilcavan Townland County Wicklow in 1839. A census substitute.

Two Widows Claimed Same Grave

The Landmark, Statesville North Carolina, 24 September 1897

Bridgeport Connecticut Dispatch to Baltimore Sun

Each of two widows yesterday claimed the same grave in Mountain Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport as the last resting place of her husband.

Mrs. otto Jones had already erected a monument over the mound in memory of the late Mr. jones, when Mrs. Charles H. Gould went to give directions for erecting a granite shaft on the same plot.

To Mrs. Gould's surprise, the grave was green, the grass neatly cut, and the headstone informed her that there rested the body of Otto Jones. Mrs. Jones was summoned, and to setle the dispute, the grave was opened.

The coffin plate bore the name of Mr. Gould. Mrs. Jones fainted on learning that through a mistake during four years she had wept over the wrong grave.

Minnie S Pace and Margaret C Clark Coffin Plates

I have added a few more Coffin Plates. Minnie S Pace and Margaret C Clark are two of the new plates. It looks like Minnie may be from KY. It is unusual to find plates from KY as it was not a common practice for people living in KY to keep the plates.

Great New Irish Databases

Hi All

Lots of great new Databases added to Ancestors At Rest this week.

People from the Fitzwilliam estate who settled in Ontario, 1847-55. In
the late 1840s a program of assisted emigration was initiated by Lord
Fitzwilliam to reduce the number of tenants on his estate in southwest
County Wicklow Ireland. Most of these emigrants sailed from New Ross to
Quebec City, but few of them stayed in Quebec, where the population was
for the most part French-speaking. Instead, they continued on up the
St. Lawrence River to the province of Ontario (then called Upper
Canada) and became part of Irish communities there. The following data
was compiled by Anne Burgess. It lists many of the Irish from the
Fitzwilliam estate who settled in the West 1/2 of Ontario, from roughly
Belleville to Lake Huron.

I have also added Tenants renting land from Earl Fitzwilliam in the
townlands of Aghold, Ardoyne, Coolboy, and Kilcavan County Wicklow
Ireland. 1839.

You can see all the new data at
Ireland Genealogy

To Whoever Took my Work and put it on Wikipedia....

I was browsing Wikepedia and stumbled on my own article and write up about Coffin Plates. It came directly from my website in my Coffin Plates section.

Wow. Deju vu!

It was a direct copy and paste from my site with NO credit to me as the author, despite the copyright notice front and center.

Yeah, those are my words on Wikipedia. My research into the topic. My hard work.

I wouldn't care if whoever lifted it from my site and submitted it to Wikipedia had done the right thing and credited me and my site for it. Of course it'd be better if this person of questionable ethics had written to ask my permission.

So whoever you are, would you copy Steven King's latest novel and put it online? (not that I'm saying I'm in his league!) Sure you would! Your morals are questionable. Apparently you don't know right from wrong. But most of us would not do such a thing.

Internet publishing is no different than real-world publishing.

So - if someone ELSE did the work, the research and the writing, don't take credit for it (that's called plagarism) and don't take it without permission and publish it somewhere else (that's called copyright infringement)

More About Baby Kintyre

The Toronto Star has another article on the mummified baby found buried beneath the floorboards of a house at 29 Kintyre Ave. in Toronto. This has been an ongoing story and many people in the genealogy community have spent a lot of time trying to figure out who the baby was.

Irish & German Immigrant Skeletons found on Staten Island

Last summer a team of archaeologists dug up skeletal bones from beneath the asphalt of a municipal parking lot in St. George, Staten Island

The bones are believed to be the remains of more than 50 19th-century European immigrants, among them victims of the Irish potato famine. There are about 10 intact adult skeletons, most of them men in their 20s and 30s. There are smaller skeletons too, but none complete as children’s bones do not survive the acidic soil.

Archaeologists have concluded that the site was a mass grave for patients quarantined at the nearby Marine Hospital. Patients died of typhus, yellow fever and other infectious diseases in the mid-1800s

More than 150 years ago the Marine Hospital was where patients were taken, and where they died in such numbers that they had to be buried in trenches, sometimes three or four bodies deep. Those were peak famine years, and most immigrants who passed through were Irish families escaping hunger and destitution and Germans fleeing political turmoil in their homeland. In 1858, the hospital burned to the ground.
