“Married to Genealogy”
arlington, va, 27 december 2012: The celebration of the National Genealogical Society Quarterly’s 100th anniversary closes the year with the release of two new videos featuring Donna Valley Russell in “Becoming a Genealogist and an Editor” and George and Donna Russell together in “Married to Genealogy.”
An expert in Western Maryland genealogy, Donna tells the story of her path from census taker to genealogist and editor. Originally from Michigan, Donna learned her skills there and served as editor of the Detroit Magazine for Genealogical Research. After she and George married, she moved to Maryland and founded her own journal, Western Maryland Genealogy. In 1985, based on the quality and quantity of her scholarly publications, she was named a fellow of the American Society of Genealogists. Her published works include Frederick County, Maryland, Wills, 1744-1794; First Families of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, 1649-1658; Frederick County, Maryland, Genealogical Research Guide; Michigan Censuses, 1710-1830; Selby Families of Colonial America; and The Ark and the Dove Adventurers (co-edited with George).
The second new video takes a lighthearted look at the genealogy scene with the George and Donna Russell cocktail hour. George Ely Russell, who first appeared in the Voices of Genealogy in January 2012, is also a fellow of the American Society of Genealogists and of the National Genealogical Society. He was the editor of the NGSQ from 1971-1986.
The videos were produced by award winning filmmakers Kate Geis and Allen Moore from interviews with Melinde Lutz Byrne, CG, FASG, co-editor of the NGSQ. Donna Valley Russell in “Becoming a Genealogist and an Editor” and Donna and George Russell in “Married to Genealogy” are now playing at http://www.ngsgenealogy.org.
Previous releases in the Voices of Genealogy archive now on the NGS website (http://www.ngsgenealogy.org) present Mary McCampbell Bell, CG; John Frederick Dorman, CG (Emeritus), FASG, FNGS, FVGS; David L. Greene, PhD, FASG; Frederick C. Hart Jr., CG, FASG; Ronald Ames Hill, PhD, CG, FASG; Henry B. Hoff, CG, FASG, FGBS; Harry Macy, FASG, FGBS; George Ely Russell, FASG, FNGS; and Shirley Langdon Wilcox, CG, FNGS.
Video interviews with leading genealogists represent just one of the many opportunities NGS offers its members for honing their skills. Members receive the society’s outstanding quarterly publications, the NGSQ and the NGS Magazine, and can also take advantage of free courses and significant discounts on publications, courses, and the NGS annual conference to take place in Las Vegas, Nevada, 8-11 May 2013; Richmond, Virginia, 7-10 May 2014; and St. Louis, Missouri, 13-16 May 2015.

Rare Spiders Discovered at 150-Year-Old London Cemetery

We don't often think of a cemetery as being a great place for wildlife but life can thrive in the most unexpected places. The rare Orb Weaver spider was spotted last December during a bat survey as part of the Wild London Inclusive London project held by staff at the London Wildlife Trust. Officials were working with the locals and staff of the Highgate Cemetery. A large population of these spiders was seen in the tombs of the Egyptian Avenue at the cemetery.

Searching for My Black Ancestor Jonathan Butler

The Challenge of Finding Our Black Ancestor's Origins

Francis X. Schumacher & Mary Butler
This is a photo of my  2nd great-grand-aunt Mary Schumacher nee Butler (1852-1924) and her husband.

Mary was the sister of my great-great-grandfather Joseph Butler (1856-between 1911-1918).

Mary and Joseph were the grandchildren of Jonathan Butler, a black man living in the Queen's Bush in what was then called Upper Canada (now the province of Ontario)

A Challenging Black Ancestor

It has been a challenge to research Jonathan Butler and his family.  Early 1800s Ontario records are sparse. We know that Jonathan was born somewhere in the USA circa 1790.  No specific location in the United States is known. There are no census records where his origins are noted.

We know he was black. He is listed on various tax, census and assessment records as "Negro" and "African"  We know his wife's name (Elizabeth Ginkins as seen in the adult baptism of his son Allen, my 3rd great-grandfather) but do not know her origins.

The earliest record for Jonathan is an 1834 Assessment record where he is recorded as "Negro Butler".
The last record of Jonathan is an 1840 "Census" which is really a tax and assessment record. He has not been found after that date - no death records, no burial records, no 1851 census record (although many of the 1851 census for Ontario are missing). We have found no record of his wife Elizabeth in any records of any year.

Jonathan Butler's Children

Jonathan's children are found in census records recorded as "African", "Mulatto" and in later years "White". We know from tax records that Jonathan had at least 5 sons and 3 daughters but we only know the names of two with certainty - Allen and George. Both married German women in the Waterloo area.

* George Butler (1832-1902) married Catherine Krump and had 11 children known.

* Allen Butler (1824-1872) married Caroline (Carrie) Weiss and had 8 children known.

* It is believed that Henry (Harry) Butler (ca 1829-between 1861-1871) who married a German woman named Sarah Susannah Foerch is another son

My 3rd great-grandfather Joanes Alexander Alan (called Allen) Butler was baptized into the Catholic Church January 26,1851 at St Agatha, Wilmot Twp, Waterloo Co. He was recorded as the son of Jonathan Butler and Elizabetha Ginkens. In his marriage record that same year (February 1851) he stated he was born in Toronto.

Allen's son Joseph, my great-grandfather, is another mystery. He disappears after the 1901 census where he is found with his wife and children living in Seaforth, Huron County Ontario. His estranged wife Caroline (Carrie) left Ontario for Detroit Michigan circa 1909. Family lore said that she left Joseph after some kind of scandal was discovered and that he "went out west". He was never heard from again although our research indicates he may have settled in Manitoba near the border of North Dakota.  If his wife can be believed, he was deceased by May 1918.

The Genealogy Challenges & Unanswered Questions

We have many challenges and puzzles regarding the Butler family and my black heritage.

1. How do we find our Jonathan Butler's origins in the United States? There are so few records for pre 1851 in Ontario and we have not been able to find what happened to him after that 1840 assessment record or where he was before the 1834 one. So we only have records of him for a six year time frame. We know he was in Toronto circa 1824 when Allen was born. But where was he before 1824 and where was he from 1824 to 1834 when he acquired land in the Queen's Bush?

2.  Where was Joseph Butler from 1901 to 1918? Was he in Manitoba? He had a brother Jacob Butler in Pembina North Dakota but we've not found any record of Joseph there. However this brother Jacob lived for several years in Montcalm, Pembina Valley Region, Manitoba. Did Jacob head there after leaving his family (or being kicked out as family lore states)? We are hoping his death record might have information on the birth place of his father Jonathan or mother Elizabeth.

If you have any suggestions or ideas for us in our search, please post them in the Comment section of this blog post. We definitely need advice on where to look next!

Grave of 219-year-old man discovered in Limerick

We may never know how the grave of John Murphy in Knockainey came to say he was 219 years old when he died. A mistake on the part of the Tombstone Engraver perhaps. Or maybe old John Murphy was a bit of a storyteller. The tombstone of the mystery man - who is surely a candidate for the Guinness Book of Records - has been discovered in the cemetery at St John’s Church in Knockainey by a local historian.

Doing More DNA Testing. Will it Show my African-American Heritage?

Ancestors At Rest: 23andMe Y-DNA Test Kit
My 23andMe DNA kits arrived yesterday. I already had my Y-DNA tested at Family Tree DNA but wanted to try another company and see what kind of results I get.

My Haplogroup is RM-269 and I'm still reading up on this to understand it better. I know that to get my terminal branch of the Y-DNA tree I need to order the order the National Genographic Geno 2.0 chip but it's almost $200.00 so will have to wait while I save my pennies!

It's been a very successful journey through FamilyTree DNA. You can read about how my DNA results allowed me to find and meet some new cousins on my Massey lineage, at The Massey DNA Connection

23andMe focuses on genetic health issues and that's intriguing. But I'm also hoping for confirmation of my African-American origins. My 4th great grandfather Jonathan Butler was a black man who came from the United States and settled in Ontario Canada some time before 1824. I know very little about him

You can read about Jonathan and see a photo of his beautiful granddaughter at The Challenge of Finding Our Black Ancestor's Origins
Ancestors At Rest: 23andMe Y-DNA Test Kit

I'm hoping 23andMe will provide more interesting details on my ethnic origins.

Next step: I'll provide the test sample and mail it back to 23andMe, then I wait.

Shallow graves unearthed at Helsinki’s Senate Square

A broken hot water pipe under Senate Square presented researchers with a unique opportunity to conduct historical excavations at the ancient grave site.
The area served as a graveyard from the mid-1600s to the 1820s. Bodies were stacked elbow to elbow in as many as five layers.

Northumberland coast's ancient grave secrets to be saved from sea

When 4,000 years ago the people living on a windy stretch of magnificent Northumbrian coastline looked for a place to bury their dead, they chose a beautiful spot - a low hillock of dry land above marshes and creeks, in sight of the sea but a kilometre safely inland.
Now the sea is lapping at the ancient graves, and its time to excavate the entire site at Low Hauxley, and rescue what remains of its ancient secrets.

Ancient Burial Cloth Provides Clues To Bronze Age Trade

After his death, his body was burned, the bones wrapped in cloth and transported in an urn. 2,800 years later, the remnants of that urn and cloth were discovered by modern-day researchers in Denmark. After a thorough analysis of the cloth, they determined that it was actually made in what is now Austria.

Ancient bones from Iron age or Roman settlement

Archaeologists who discovered human remains close to the A453 in Nottinghamshire believe they're from a late Iron age or early Roman settlement.
The bones which date back around two thousand years, were found in shallow graves during work to turn the road into a dual carriageway.
As well as the human remains, archaeologists unearthed pottery and jewellery including a jet bracelet.

9,300-year-old Kennewick Man skeleton found in Washington

Kennewick Man was definitely not a Native American, according to the most recent study of the prehistoric remains.
The 9,300-year-old skeleton actually has more in common with Polynesians, according to Doug Owsley, an anthropologist with the Smithsonian Institute who released an updated review of the bones Wednesday.
Owsley found that Kennewick man's skull has several similarities to the ancient coastal people in Asia, meaning he likely shares a common ancestor with modern day Polynesians.

Ancient graves excavated in hunt for Mona Lisa

Researchers have opened ancient graves in a dilapidated convent in Florence as they continue their hunt for the woman who inspired Leonardo da Vinci to paint the famous Mona Lisa.
The team of experts have been working in the Saint Orsola convent since April, believe the body of the woman who modelled for da Vinci back in the 16th century is buried there.
According to Italian art historians, the real Mona Lisa was Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a rich Florentine silk merchant named Francesco del Giocondo, who is thought to have commissioned the portrait - although there is no definitive proof of this.

Woman Crushed by Backhoe at Cemetery

A horrendous news story but because I follow cemetery news, I have come to realize that many many people die in cemetery accidents every year. Old tombstones topple for example. So please everyone, be careful when looking for your ancestors' graves!

Sep 24, 2012 8:54 PM ETA freak accident killed a woman in the Baron de Hirsch cemetery in Cote-des-Neiges

The 44-year-old woman was at the cemetery on Montreal’s Mountain Sights Avenue when she was crushed by a backhoe performing work at the site.

Searching Free Michigan Death Records for a Massey

I've been searching the free online Michigan Death Records for my William Ivis Massey who most likely died sometime between 1891 and 1898. So far I've had no luck which leads me to think he may have died elsewhere.

Since he worked for the railroad it is quite possible he was in another state or even back in Ontario Canada where he had family.

William was born in 1847 in Quebec (called Canada East at the time) and was married twice. The first marriage was to a Miss Wheeley, the second to Jeanette (Jennie) MacDonald. I've not been able to find out his first wife's name nor when she died. But by 1878 he and wife #1 had a son George born in Ontario, and by 1881 he was in Detroit Michigan marrying Jennie.

If you recognize any of these names, contact me at ancestorsatrestATgmail.com (change the AT to @)

Here's the links for the free Michigan death records:

Cemetery Lost and Now Found!

One crumbling tombstone remains, having fallen to the ground. The others are long gone although Lorine McGinnis Schulze of Olive Tree Genealogy remembers seeing six still standing in the early 1970s.

Now the town of Midland Ontario has discovered this old Pioneer Cemetery and is searching for records of those buried there since the early 1800s.

Read about the forgotten cemetery, lost and now found.

Historic Home Once Owned by Olive Tree Genealogy

Original article written by Lorine McGinnis Schulze of Olive Tree Genealogy and published here in part with her permission.
House present day

This is one of the homes I used to live in. We bought it in 1974 and lived there for three years. It was built in 1902 and has recently been classified as a historic home.

I wish the cute little barn/garage at the end of the driveway was visible. I'm not sure when it was built.

The home, when I lived there, had a front and back staircase. The back one went from the kitchen to an upstairs bedroom and I assume it was originally for the servants.

Old Tombstone Kills Young Boy in Utah

Parents and Grandparents - watch your children! Please be sure to teach them about the dangers of old tombstones. This is a very sad but true story of a young boy killed by an older tombstone when it fell on him.

Every year hundreds of people are injured and killed by older tombstones that have fallen into disrepair. Contrary to popular belief, it is not the responsibility of the cemetery to maintain these stones! It is up to the families of the deceased.

Don't let your children push or lean against tombstones. Don't let them play hide and seek. We've all done it but we need to think about it and try to prevent such tragedies from happening

Free Access to Ancestry.ca June 27-July 2

Ancestry.ca Family history website offers free access to more than 40 million historical records that trace the development of the nation over the last 145 years

June 27, 2012 (TORONTO) – In honour of Canada Day, Ancestry.ca, Canada’s favourite family history website, is offering free access to 40 million historical records that outline just how far the country has come as a nation in the past 145 years.

Available free from June 27 through July 2, the records cover the years leading up to and following Confederation and include censuses, birth, marriage and death records, passenger lists, military records and many more.

“Many Canadians today celebrate the diversity of our nation but that multi-culturalism only came following a period of incredible growth and development in the years immediately before and after nationhood,” said Ancestry.ca’s Julie Wingate. “These records really paint a picture of how much we’ve changed as a country and give us a real reason to celebrate Canada Day.”

In 1871, just four short years after Confederation, Canada conducted its first Census as a nation and the results showed it was a country made up of British and French immigrants and a stark lack of diversity.

In fact, according to the 1871 Census of Canada:
  • Just 101 people are listed as being of Russian origin, compared to 500,000 in 2006
  • Nearly 900 people are listed as being Italian, compared to 1.4 million in 2006
  • Only one man is listed as being of Chinese descent in the 1871 Census, compared to 1.3 million in 2006
Between June 27 and July 2, millions of records will be accessible to Canadians for free on Ancestry.ca. The records are from some of the largest collections on Ancestry.ca, including:

·         Canadian Passenger Lists and Ocean Arrivals - outlining the masses of people who arrived by ship -- the only form of international travel available to people at the time -- at port cities across Canada
·         The 1871 Census of Canada - the first Census Canada conducted as a nation, which gives a snapshot of the life of the people living at the time, including who they lived with, their ages, their jobs, the birthplaces of their parents, their neighbours and more
·         Vital records (i.e. birth, marriage and death records) from British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia - outlining the significant moments in the people’s lives like children born, marriages and deaths.
Search Ancestry.ca for your family.

Soldier's remains found at Waterloo

Almost 200 years after Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo, Belgian archaeologists have unearthed the complete remains of a young soldier.

Believed to have died June 18, 1815, the remains were found under 15 inches of soil as if the young soldier's comrades had hurriedly buried him when he fell on the battleground

"You can almost see him dying," Belgian archeologist Dominique Bosquet said of the skeleton, lying on its back with the spherical musket ball that felled the soldier still between his ribs.

Believed to have died June 18, 1815, the remains were found under 15 inches of soil as if the young soldier's comrades had hurriedly buried him when he fell on the battleground.

Vampire graves discovered near Black Sea

Archaeologists have excavated two suspected "vampire" graves in the Black Sea town of Sokopol, Bulgaria. Each 700-year-old skeleton had an iron rod pinned into its chest. This reflected the customs and the times, when villagers feared that bad men had the power to rise from their graves.
