I found this original Civil War document on Ebay. At the top it says, "Certificate To Be Given To Volunteers At The Time Of Their Discharge To Enable Them To Receive Their Pay, &c." Right below it says that George Morris of the 177th New York Regiment born in Hudson, New York aged 27 years old, 5 feet, 7 3/4 inches, with light complexion, blue eyes, light hair, by occupation a book binder having served honestly and faithfully with his Company in capacity of Private, "...to the date, of his death the Sixteenth day of August 1863."
It further says he was last paid by the Paymaster Maj. Vedder and has pay due him from that time to the date of his death.
This document is up for sale on Ebay. If George Morris is one of your ancestors you might want to have a look.
