Two Widows Claimed Same Grave

The Landmark, Statesville North Carolina, 24 September 1897

Bridgeport Connecticut Dispatch to Baltimore Sun

Each of two widows yesterday claimed the same grave in Mountain Grove Cemetery, Bridgeport as the last resting place of her husband.

Mrs. otto Jones had already erected a monument over the mound in memory of the late Mr. jones, when Mrs. Charles H. Gould went to give directions for erecting a granite shaft on the same plot.

To Mrs. Gould's surprise, the grave was green, the grass neatly cut, and the headstone informed her that there rested the body of Otto Jones. Mrs. Jones was summoned, and to setle the dispute, the grave was opened.

The coffin plate bore the name of Mr. Gould. Mrs. Jones fainted on learning that through a mistake during four years she had wept over the wrong grave.

Minnie S Pace and Margaret C Clark Coffin Plates

I have added a few more Coffin Plates. Minnie S Pace and Margaret C Clark are two of the new plates. It looks like Minnie may be from KY. It is unusual to find plates from KY as it was not a common practice for people living in KY to keep the plates.

Great New Irish Databases

Hi All

Lots of great new Databases added to Ancestors At Rest this week.

People from the Fitzwilliam estate who settled in Ontario, 1847-55. In
the late 1840s a program of assisted emigration was initiated by Lord
Fitzwilliam to reduce the number of tenants on his estate in southwest
County Wicklow Ireland. Most of these emigrants sailed from New Ross to
Quebec City, but few of them stayed in Quebec, where the population was
for the most part French-speaking. Instead, they continued on up the
St. Lawrence River to the province of Ontario (then called Upper
Canada) and became part of Irish communities there. The following data
was compiled by Anne Burgess. It lists many of the Irish from the
Fitzwilliam estate who settled in the West 1/2 of Ontario, from roughly
Belleville to Lake Huron.

I have also added Tenants renting land from Earl Fitzwilliam in the
townlands of Aghold, Ardoyne, Coolboy, and Kilcavan County Wicklow
Ireland. 1839.

You can see all the new data at
Ireland Genealogy

To Whoever Took my Work and put it on Wikipedia....

I was browsing Wikepedia and stumbled on my own article and write up about Coffin Plates. It came directly from my website in my Coffin Plates section.

Wow. Deju vu!

It was a direct copy and paste from my site with NO credit to me as the author, despite the copyright notice front and center.

Yeah, those are my words on Wikipedia. My research into the topic. My hard work.

I wouldn't care if whoever lifted it from my site and submitted it to Wikipedia had done the right thing and credited me and my site for it. Of course it'd be better if this person of questionable ethics had written to ask my permission.

So whoever you are, would you copy Steven King's latest novel and put it online? (not that I'm saying I'm in his league!) Sure you would! Your morals are questionable. Apparently you don't know right from wrong. But most of us would not do such a thing.

Internet publishing is no different than real-world publishing.

So - if someone ELSE did the work, the research and the writing, don't take credit for it (that's called plagarism) and don't take it without permission and publish it somewhere else (that's called copyright infringement)

Irish & German Immigrant Skeletons found on Staten Island

Last summer a team of archaeologists dug up skeletal bones from beneath the asphalt of a municipal parking lot in St. George, Staten Island

The bones are believed to be the remains of more than 50 19th-century European immigrants, among them victims of the Irish potato famine. There are about 10 intact adult skeletons, most of them men in their 20s and 30s. There are smaller skeletons too, but none complete as children’s bones do not survive the acidic soil.

Archaeologists have concluded that the site was a mass grave for patients quarantined at the nearby Marine Hospital. Patients died of typhus, yellow fever and other infectious diseases in the mid-1800s

More than 150 years ago the Marine Hospital was where patients were taken, and where they died in such numbers that they had to be buried in trenches, sometimes three or four bodies deep. Those were peak famine years, and most immigrants who passed through were Irish families escaping hunger and destitution and Germans fleeing political turmoil in their homeland. In 1858, the hospital burned to the ground.

Boy in Iron Coffin Identified as William White died 1852

A body in a cast iron coffin found by utility workers in Washington in 2005, has been identified.

Dozens of individuals used census records, obituaries in newspapers and DNA Testing to identify the remains as 15-year-old William Taylor White, who died in 1852.

William Taylor White was buried in the Columbia College cemetery and it appears he was simply left behind when the cemetery was moved.

White, from Accomack, Virginia was a descendant of Anthony West, one of the Jamestown settlers

The team of scientists working on finding who was buried in the coffin found an obituary published in the Daily National Intelligencer newspaper of Washington on Jan. 28, 1852, confirming White died Jan. 24, 1852, after a short illness.

Clothing historians were able to determine that he was dressed in a shirt, vest and pants that are consistent with clothing styles of the early to mid-1850s.

Getting Copies of Documents on AncestorsAtRest

Genealogists frequently ask me where and how they can get copies of a genealogy document they saw listed on my Blog (AncestorsAtRest.blogspot.com) or my website AncestorsAtRest.com

Many documents such as coffin plates, funeral cards, obituaries and family bibles are submitted to me by visitors. Sometimes they want to be contacted, so I provide their email address and name. Sometimes they don't. In those cases all you will see is their name.

Some items, especially the coffin plates, are my own private collection. I probably won't sell you the coffin plate (although you can always ask).

If I don't have a name with the items, it's either mine or it was an early submission (before I was careful about putting submitter names with those items!)

I hope you have found an interesting item for your ancestor and can enjoy the items online.

Are you related? Mummified Baby found in wall

Jul 25, 2007

A local renovator found a mummified infant wrapped in a flowered comforter and old newspaper dated Sept. 12, 1925, in the wall of a house he was working on in Riverdale, Toronto.

A land title search showed that the Kintyre Ave. home was purchased in 1919 by Wesley Russell. Newspapers report that Mr. Russell died in February, 1939 and his wife Della lived in the house until 1941, when she was admitted as a patient to Toronto Ontario Hospital. It isn't known if the baby belonged to the couple who lived in the home at the time. In fact it isn't known when or how the baby died - while the 1925 newspaper might seem like a clue, that doesn't mean the death happened that year.

Many reports and articles are circulating and some reporters have discovered a few genealogical facts about Wesley and Della - such as their marriage in Belleville Ontario in 1898. I thought it would be interesting to see if I could find more, as some papers are stating that they hope relatives will be found who might see to the burial of the infant.

Wesley Russell & Della Rutter were married 12 Oct 1898 in Belleville Ontario. Ancestry.com records do not show parents' names but the online Bridge St. Wesleyan Methodist (now United Church), Belleville records show Wesley as age 19 son of
Wellington RUSSELL & Fanny BELLKNAP

The 1901 Census finds Wesley F Russel age 21 and Della Russell, age 20, living in Ameliasburg, Prince Edward County

The 1911 Census finds Wesley Russell age 29 and Della age 25 along with Charles Rutter age 23(probably Della's brother) living at 3 Ashby St in Toronto.

Charles Ruter is found in the 1901 census for Prince Edward County with his parents James A Rutter (born ca 1851) and Emmma J. (born ca 1861) along with 2 siblings - James M born ca 1889 and a daughter born ca 1893.

Checking the online Ontario Vital Stats found James Morden Rutter born 3 Oct 1889 to James Albert Rutter and Emma Jane Babcock in Prince Edward County

More checking found other children born to James Albert Rutter and Emma Jane Babcock:

* Alla [Ella?] May Born 20 May 1893 in Prince Edward County

* Herbert or Howard born 14 Jan 1897 in Prince Edward County

Next I found the marriage of James Albert Rutter and Emma Jane Babcock on 13 Aug 1876 in Ameliasburg Township. Unfortunately the parents' names are not given

The last great clue came from the 1881 census -- James Rutter, 28, wife Emma J. 22 and two children - Sarah A age 4 and Ardelia E age 4 months, are found in Ameliasburg, Prince Edward county.

Ardelia of course is our DELLA who married Wesley Russel and who may or may not be the mother of the dead child found in the walls

I haven't found the birth of Della or Charles Rutter but many births were never registered. However I am sure that Della was a child of James Rutter and Emma Babcock.

Hopefully someone recognizes these names as being part of their family tree!

Canadian Ships Passenger Lists being indexed

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) and Ancestry.ca will focus on indexing the Quebec City passenger lists from 1870 - 1900, totalling more than 750,000 names. The digital images of these and other Canadian ships passenger lists are already on the LAC website but can only be searched by ship name or date of arrival.

The index for Quebec City will be available free of charge on LAC as well as on Ancestry.ca. Eventually the entire Canadian passenger list collection from 1865 to 1935, which includes ports in Halifax, St. John, Vancouver, Victoria and North Sydney, is digitized and indexed.

In addition to the Canadian passenger list collection, later this year Ancestry.ca and LAC will make available border crossings records from the United States to Canada that took place between 1908 and 1935.

These additions add to Ancestry.ca's current online Canadian Border Crossing Collection, which include more than 4 million names of individuals who crossed the Canadian-U.S. border between 1895 and 1956.

Theft of 800 Gravestone Bronze Urns

Police suspect high price for bronze behind theft of 800 tombstone urns

John Willox and his girlfriend had hoped to place some flowers at her father's grave over the weekend. It was the second anniversary of his death and they wanted to mark it.

But when they arrived at Glendale Memorial Gardens in Toronto's west end they found the bronze flower vase mounted on the tombstone was gone. So were the vases on about a dozen other tombstones nearby, all part of an apparent theft of about 800 vases from the Albion Rd. cemetery.

Death Record Finder - Finding an Ancestor in Death Records and Substitutes

Most genealogists search death records such as Cemetery records, Obituaries and Vital Stats (Death Registrations or Certificates). If we don't find our ancestor in one of those death records, we're stuck! Where to search next? The ADF (Ancestor Death Finder) can help.

What happens when a loved one dies? What events take place around the death of a family member? What kind of death record paper trail is created on the death of an individual? The answers to these questions will lead you to other sources of death records and hopefully end that brick-wall.

When an ancestor dies, many records of that death might be created. Let's talk about records kept before an ancestor death and those created after a death.

Was your ancestor ill before death? Look for records of your ancestor in health care records before death
* Hospital Records & Receipts
* Doctor's Bill & Receipts
* Druggist, Pharmacy and Store Bills & Receipts

Your Ancestor Dies - what happens now? Depending on the type of death (accident, suicide, murder) an inquest might be held. A coroner's report might be filed. There may be a newspaper account of the death. There will be a doctor certificate of death and possibly registration of the death.Look for death records in
* Coroner's inquest
* Court records
* Newspaper accounts
* Doctor's certificate of death
* Church Record of Death
* Death Registration in Vital Stats

Friends and relatives have to be notified so look for death records in
* Funeral Cards
* Obituary
* Death Notices

Seventy tombstones toppled at Delhi Cemetery Ontario

Cemetery vandalism 'just awful'

Seventy tombstones toppled at Delhi Cemetery; monument makers help fix damage for free

Vicki Hartlen DELHI NEWS-RECORD

Wednesday April 04, 2007

"Is nothing sacred anymore?" asked Norfolk County OPP Constable Marc Perrier, as he surveyed the Delhi Cemetery last Thursday.

Perrier and Const. Dave Ongena were at the cemetery collecting fingerprints, footprints, paintballs and other evidence left behind after 70 headstones were toppled sometime during the early morning hours of March 29.

Fresh flowers scattered and trampled could be found littered around toppled headstones.

While all the headstones represent loved ones now resting in peace there were some that stirred emotions, like that of the late Linda Marlene Derer who was six at the time of her death.

"Look at this," said grave technician Orrie Ecker, who was at the cemetery assessing the damage, as he held up a piece of a porcelain broken off the wing of Derer's tombstone angel. "This was the angel her parents probably put on her gravestone to act as a guardian. Now it has a broken wing, what a shame."

Shaking their heads and trying to figure out why anyone would find pleasure in disrupting the dead, Ecker said this is a crime without any just cause.

"These people have done nothing to deserve this," he said. "It's a shame."

Ongena, the first officer at the scene, said he originally thought the act of vandalism was reserved to a few headstones near the centre of the cemetery, until he
continued to the north side of the cemetery where the majority of the damage was concentrated.

"People are obviously very upset by this," said Ongena, as random people entered the area to check on their loved one's headstones. "The problem with vandalism in a cemetery is that these headstones aren't just headstones, to the families and loved ones of these individuals these headstones represent their deceased loved ones. It's there [sic] memory that's been disrespected."

Ongena is hopeful that fingerprints from the monument surfaces and fresh footprints in the soil may help identify those responsible.

"My mothers and fathers headstone has been overturned," said Delhi Cemetery Company director George Kough, pointing in the direction of their plots. "I want to find out what joy anybody would get out of treating someone's late loved one this way. What did it accomplish?"

Although Kough had questioned how the estimated $5,000 in damage would be corrected, he speculated last Thursday the cost would likely be incurred through insurance or from the family's pockets.

But it was an offer from Jack Bradfield, of Bradfield Monuments, and Peter Mauthe, of J&M Memorial, that provided comfort.

"They were so disgusted by what happened they came forward and offered to fix the headstones free of charge," said cemetery board president Bert Hooftman. "This was a Godsend to us because (the DCC) is not a money-making outfit. We didn't know where we were going to come up with the money to fix all the damage done."

Bradfield said he closed his Simcoe location to bring his entire staff, while Mauthe said he left just his wife in their Simcoe office and brought the rest of his staff to Delhi.

"It's just awful what has been done here," said Bradfield. "These stones aren't light, which is why I can't for the life of me figure out how they managed to get so many of them off."

"If you've got to find a positive here, it's that at least there wasn't a lot of damage done to the headstones besides being push off their mounts," said Mauthe. "This is the worst case of cemetery vandalism I've seen, that's for sure."

As Bradfield, Mauthe and their crews worked to erect the monuments, many local residents were arriving at the cemetery to check the status of family headstones.

"My father's stone has been turned over, who do I talk to about putting it back up?" asked one gentleman, who declined to give his name.

"You don't have to worry about it," responded Bradfield. "We're here and we're going to take care of it."

"You are?" said the man. "Oh, thank you so much. I didn't know what I was going to do. Thank you."

The two simple words made the effort worth it for Bradfield and Mauthe.

"All I have to hear is thank you and I know I'm doing a good thing," said Mauthe.

Last weekend two Norfolk County youths contacted OPP about their involvement with the cemetery vandalism, which resulted in both being charged with mischief over $5,000

The first youth, a 14-year-old Delhi boy, contacted police and revealed his involvement on March 31, while the second youth, a 17-year-old male, came to OPP headquarters in Simcoe on April 1 and admitted his involvement with the incident.

The two are to appear in Provincial Court in Simcoe at a later date to answer to the charges.

Police believe other persons may be involved with the vandalism. Police are asking for those responsible to come forward. They are also encouraging anyone with knowledge on
this crime to come forward.

Obituary James DRENAN, Vermont

James DRENAN

Died at his residence in Woodbury, Sept 12, James DRENAN, aged 42.

For the last tenyears he was a worthy member of the M. E. church. He was a zealous and devoted Christian. A warm friend to the chruch, the slave and unconverted sinner—and for these he plead, with powers that few possess.

He had a peaceful and triumphat death. When drawing near the close of life he remarked ”that he longed to depart and be with Jesus.” He observed to his wife, “I love you and the dear children, but I love my Jesus more.” Thus he joyfully took his departure to the world of spirits, leaving a wife and six small children, together with a large circle of friends to mourn their loss, but comforted with the assurance, that their loss is his gain.

Obituary Jennie S. Haskell nee Lilley, Vermont & New Hampshire

OBITUARY

Died in Acworth, N. H., November 7th, of typhoid fever Jennie S. HASKELL, daughter of Patrick and Clarissa LILLEY of Woodbury, Vermont., aged 36 years, 5 months and 4 days.

As a child she was known but to be loved, and as she advanced in years and he acquaintances extended, she commanded universal respect where known.

At the age of about twenty years she married Charlie E. HASKELL of Calais. In September, 1878, they went to Acworth, New Hampshire where they resided until her death and the high esteem in which she was held by the people where she lived, the following shows, having been written by a lady of that place:

”Of a quiet, unobtrusive nature, always in her proper place and industriously striving to do her whole duty in her home, she steadily gained the esteem and love of all who knew her.

Only three short years since she came among us a stranger, and today the
tearful eyes and tender words of her friends and neighbors, as they review
together their pleasant recollections of Jennie, prove how strongly she had become endeared to their hearts, and how kindly her memory will be
cherished.

’She’s crossed the shining river
On waves of azure blue,
To weave with fragrant garlands
A home of rest for you.

You’ll cross the shining river,
You’ll clasp her to your heart,
Where love shall reign forever,
Where loved ones never part.’
South Acworth, N. H. , Nov. 8, ‘81”

The circumstances of her death in some respects were very afflicting. The sad news of her sickness reached her parents on Saturday evening, and on Monday morning her mother started to see her, arriving at her home two and one-half hours after her death, not having heard the sad news until she reached the door of the home.

The remains were brought to her former home where her funeral was attended by many of her friends and acquaintances.

Mr. and Mrs. LILLEY wish to say “that the people in Acworth have their highest esteem and most profound gratitude for their kindness to their child while in their midst.”

Obituary Warner S. DRENAN, Vermont

WARNER S. DRENAN

Warner S. DRENAN is dead. After years of suffering, he breathed his last, Thursday night at his residence on Highland Ave., surrounded by dear friends, in the presence of a loving wife and baby children. It is not known how long he had been ill nor how much he had suffered. Born of hardy, pioneer parents, his wasn’t a nature that would complain and it is evident that he has suffered in silence for several years. The recent and more severe illness came upon him more than a year ago and cause was then diagnosed as consuption. About three months ago he was prostrated with the terrible malady and from which prostration he never recovered. Kind hands of loving friends ministered tohis every wnt and the best professional service was tendered him, but the fell destroyer had a too tenacious grasp on a constitution never strong and he passed away as in a gentle sleep, mourned by friends, relatives and neighbors alike. The editor of the GAZETTE regrets to state that he had no personal acquaintance with Mr. DRENAN, but he notes that his neighbors were his friends and a shadow of sorrow seems to hang over the whole community in the untimely demise of this popular young man. He has been a resident of Hardwick since he was five years of age.

He was born at Fort Slocum in 1864 and moved here with his father in 1869. Though bereft of a mother’s careduring his tender years his manly nature led him in paths that were right and he grew to manhood with attainments that, had he health, would have given him a peerage among peers. A close student at the Hardwick Academy, at the age of seventeen he was possessed of qualifications that entitled him to the positon of teacher which fact was taken advantage of and he followed that vocation for eight years, teaching the East Hardwick school successfully for seven terms.

In 1889 he married Miss Alma M. SILLOWAY, an estimable young lady of Elmore, who had been an assistant teacher to him during several terms. It may have been about this time that Mr. DRENAN became cognizant of the malady that later caused his demise. Leaving bright prospects at the old home, taking with him his bride of but a few hours he went to Sprague, Wash., where he secured a lucrativ position with the Union Pacific railroad. After five years of constant labor there he returned to Hardwick the illness of his father demanding his attention. Since then he has earned his livelihood by such light work as he was able to do.

The funeral was heldd from the Methodist Episcopal church last Saturday at one o’clock, Rev. W. S. SMITHERS officiating. The Hardwick band of which the deceased was an honored member attended the procession from the residence to the church thence to the cemetery, rendering beautiful dirges, of which the deceased was fond in life.

One of the largest congregations ever assembled in the M. E. church was present to do homage to an honest man. The floral offerings were very beautiful and were ingeniously arranged among the floral tributes was a very beautiful wreath in the centre of which were the letters “H. C. B.” The arrangement of the flowers was made by Miss Carrie WILLIAMS. A large procession followed the remains to the new cemetry. There he peacefully sleeps on the hillside among the flowers of his native town, and though interred with sorrow and gloom the birds are singing requiems over the new made mound in joy that a suffering soul has been released from troulbe and is at last at rest.

Some other world is glad to see
One star that ‘s gone away;
The light whose going makes our night
Makes somewhere else a day.

Names Of Electors In Oswego New York

I have put a new database online for Oswego, New York. Names Of Electors In Oswego New York. The list of names on this page were found in the Samuel Stevenson papers. Samuel Stevenson ran a sawmill in Oswego, Oswego County, New York. He started to run the Sawmill in Dec of 1858 and was still running it in 1860.

The list of names on this page were found on some old papers that have been torn out of a ledger. The ledger was in alphabetical order but the only pages that have survived are C, D, V, W, H, S. I have not yet been able to determine the year of this election but from looking at the names and comparing them to census records I feel that it is most likely from the 1860 to 1900 time frame.

If you want to have a look at the database go to

Obituary Josie L. Batchelder nee Drenan, Vermont

(No paper name given. Pasted in back cover of Bible.)

BATCHELDER

BATCHELDER—Died, in Hardwick, Vt., November 13, Josie L. BATCHELDER, aged forty-five years, six months and four days. Mrs. BATCHELDER was born in Woodbury, Vt., and was the youngest daughter of the late James and Clarissa DRENAN. She was married January 1, 1860, and in September, 1861, Mr. BATCHELDER enlisted in the United States service in which he continued for three years. Being quite frail during this time, Mrs. BATCHELDER broke down in health and never recovered. Throught the close attention of a kind husband and friends her life was prolonged much beyond
its apparent limit. She early gave her heart to the Savior, and though deprived of many religious privileges by reason of poor health she took great delight in reading her Bible and in religious conversation, thus showing her sincere love for Christ and his cause. She ever had a pleasant word for all.

A few days before her death she told Mr. BATCHELDER that she was soon to die, and gave directions in regard to her funeral, making choice of those who should assist inits duties, and choosing two friends who should care for her in her approaching dissolution and prepare her for burial. In a few hours she was taken violently worse and continued to decline until death came to her relief. She leaves no children, a son of four years having died some twenty years ago.

Her funeral services were held in Woodbury, Rev. J. D. BAILEY officiating and speaking from Psalms xi: 1, “In the Lord put I my trust”-- words of her selection. The high esteem in which she was held was shown by the many friends who attended her funeral and by the sympathy expressed in various ways. The following lines were kindly composed by Mrs. S. L. SABIN of Woodbury:

Another has passed from this world of ours,
And tender ties are riven”
While one is left alone to mourn,
Another’s found the rest of heaven.

How sad the loss, the parting pain,
The bleeding heart and sore,
While we yearn for a voice and footstep
That returns to us no more.

But we know there are mansions in heaven,
and beside the jasper sea
Our dear ones are watching and waiting--
Yes, waiting for you and for me.

Ne’er let the heart give place to doubt,
Nor ask, nor question why;
Enough to know, if faithful her
We’ll meet the loved ones by and by.”

Obituary Major J. S. DRENAN 1840-?

OBITUARIES

Hardwick (presumed Vermont)
Death of Maj. J. S. DRENAN

We regret to chronicle the death of Major J. S. DRENAN, which occurred at his home here on Sunday last. Deceased was born March 22, 1840. He enlisted at the beginning of the civil war and served for three years, making an excellent war record; for nine months he was confined in a rebel prison. After the war Major DRENAN lived at Morristown for several years, removing to Hardwick, where he had resided ever since, esteemed by his fellow citizens. He organized the G.A. R. post at Hardwick, which bears his name, and was its first commander; for four years also he was secretary and treasurer of the Vermont Association of ex-prisoners of war. The funeral was held on Wednesday under the auspices of the post, the Masonic fraternity also participating. (No date or name of paper on obit) Transcribed by Ruth Barton, 11 March 2007. New Death Records On Ancestors At Rest

Hi again

I have put more new data online on Ancestors At Rest this week. I have added more coffin plates to the index. One pair of plates is most interesting as they are for a husband and wife from Maine. Andrew Leighton and his wife Sophia. The coffin plate for Sophia who died in 1864 is quite nice as it is one of the more rare patterns of early coffin plates

I have also updated my Death, Funeral and Burial Customs pages

Hope you find a ancestor.
Brian.
