Canadian Directories (Annuaires canadiens) online!

Library and Archives Canada is pleased to announce the launch of phase two of the Canadian Directories site (a project funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Canadian Culture Online initiative). The addition of 80 new directories to our growing database brings a total of 95 searchable directories to the site.

With this phase, LAC has focused upon the regions of Ottawa, Halifax and environs; these regions were selected to complement the digital initiatives of our colleagues across the nation, including Bibliothèque nationale de Québec and Our Roots: Canada's Local Histories Online.

In addition, LAC has introduced a new section entitled CityScapes, which offers a brief historical overview of the cities whose directories have been digitized. You are invited to visit the site

For more information, please contact Project Manager Susan Globensky at 992-2520, webservices@lac-bac.gc.ca

Cooley Pioneer Cemetery May be Bull-dozed

The City of Hamilton has declared the recently discovered Cooley Pioneer cemetery to be an "Unapproved Cemetery." The land owners want to relocate this cemetery for the purpose of development. Many of those buried are most likely Loyalists who settled in this part of Upper Canada (present day Ontario) after 1783.

An archeology firm hired by the developers believes the cemetery might contain as many as 102 bodies, and dates from the late 1700s.

Please see notice below:

Re: Burial Site located at the Proposed Lime Kiln Road Subdivision, Part of Lots 48 & 49, Concession 2 and the Wildwood Estates 5 (Block 3, 62M-898), Part of Lot 48, Concession 2 (Formerly within the Township of Ancaster),
City of Hamilton. (Physically located in a field off Rousseaux St. between Greenravine Dr. and Lime Kiln Rd.)

Take notice that on November 30, 2004 a burial site at the above location was reported to the Registrar of the Cemeteris Act (Revised).

An investigation conducted under the provisions of the Cemeteries Act (Revised) indicates the discovery of 99 distinct grave shafts. This early pioneer cemetery circa 1786-1824, now archaeologically known as the Cooley Cemetery, is likely the original cemetery for the Ancaster community. Members of the Cooley and Hatt families are known to be buried here.

The Registrar hereby gives notice of the intention to declare the site to be an "Unapproved Cemetery," and invites representatives of persons whose remains are still interred to contact the Registrar in writing within two
weeks after May 13, 2005.

Dated at Toronto this 6th day of May 2005.

Gravediggers throw party at cemetery

It seems that some gravediggers have been holding an annual barbeque in a local cemetery in Belgium.

Gravedigger Willy Wouters was reportedly surprised when this year's festivities were discovered, and reported to local police. He told the papers that previously the cemetery closed at 5 pm and they didn't start the barbeque til later. Now with the cemetery open til sunset, relatives of the deceased were startled and upset to find music playing and children running over the graves.

Bill S-18 providing access to the 1911 Canadian Census passed the House of Commons

At 8:00 AM PDT Tuesday June 28th MP Dominic LeBlanc, Deputy Government Whip, rose and stated words to the effect that "If the Speaker would seek it, I believe he would have the unanimous consent of the House to deem Bill S-18 -- An Act to amend the Statistics Act, to have passed Third Reading". That consent was given.

Bill S-18 has now passed all necessary stages in both the Senate and the House of Commons and all that remains to be done to make it law is for it to receive Royal Assent. It is expected that assent will be received shortly.

It is believed that the Library and Archives of Canada has already scanned images
of the 1911 National Census of Canada and they should be available online almost immediately.

Better Ancestry Search Engine from Steve Morse

GOOD NEWS!!! -- You can now search on Ancestry.com without having to put in three characters for the name. Up until now, if you entered a partial first name or a partial last name, you had to enter at least three characters plus a wildcard character.

Steve Morse has written some new code that gets around this limitation by searching on all combinations of the letters that you left out.

For example, suppose you want to search for all people with first initial J and last name Smith. Steve's software will automatically search for all Smiths with first names starting with Jaa, then Jab, then Jac, etc. up to Jzz.

It might take as much as 5 minutes to get all the results, but it's automatic -- you submit one search and Steve does 676 searches for you. If you search for all Smiths with first name starting with Ja, Steve can do that faster (less than ten seconds) because he only has to do 26 searches in that case.

To use this feature, go to Steve's website at http://stevemorse.organd select any of his search forms that search on Ancestry.com (e.g., any of his passenger search forms other than Ellis Island, and his census search-by-name form for any census year).

Then enter less than three characters for either the first or last name, and Steve's new software will kick in, doing repeated searches on your behalf.

Have fun!

Terrace Lawn Cemetery Improvement Project - North Bay, ON, Canada

From Murray Pletsch, Chairman
Friends Of Terrace Lawn Cemetery Committee
North Bay, Ontario, Canada

Dear Fellow Researchers:

1. Terrace Lawn Cemetery is a large 91 years old cemetery near the centre of North Bay, Ontario.

2. The cemetery is slowly but surely deteriorating, mainly because the plots have been all sold and the maintenance of the cemetery is relying mainly on the interest from the Perpetual Care Trust Fund. Most of you likely know with the reduced interest rates over the past 10 years or so....the interest on these funds is also reduced and one does not need to be a banker to paint a clearer picture.

3. All the grave markers in the cemetery have been photographed and are accessable at the Link below.

4. This message is general in nature, but more specifically addressed to descendants of ancestors buried in Terrace Lawn Cemetery in North Bay and who are dispersed all over the world. Should you know a friend or family member who are
descendants, please pass the message to them.

5. The message? Please check http://home.cogeco.ca/~terrace for details about the project and how your help can really make a difference.

St Mary's Church in Lenham Kent England records of Births, Marriages, Deaths

I've just uploaded 381 births, marriages and deaths taken from the register of St Mary's Church in Lenham Kent.

St Marys Church Records will get you started.

These records of births, baptisms, marriages, deaths and burials at St. Mary's Church in Lenham, Kent, England were made by my mother in 2000. While on a visit to Lenham Kent England, she visited St. Mary's where she abstracted 381 surname records with a connection to our family genealogy.

These are not complete records from St. Mary's, they are only a partial transcript of vital records taken from register books still held in the church. The 381 records
abstracted by my mother start in 1592 and end in 1891. I hope they help someone find an ancestor.
